King of All the Wild Things Socks
King of All the Wild Things Socks
Made to echo Max’s wolf suit and
his King of All the Wild Things
crown. The picot hemmed cuff
tends to “flower” and fit very
loosely, but running elastic thread
through the top of the ribbing will
ensure a snug and
comfy fit.
Yarn: Gems Fingering Wt. by Louet : (1) 50g. skein of Cloud Grey, and less than 1 skein of Goldilocks (will need roughly 10-12 g) and Paisley (will need roughly 25 g).
Gauge: 6 Stitches/inch in Stockinette
Needles: set of 4 or 5 US 3 DPNs
Notions: elastic thread, stitch markers, yarn needle
Size: Women’s 9ish. Sorry, I haven’t had an opportunity to knit in different sizes. I would recommend that if you want to make the sock more narrow, try decreasing the pattern cast-on in increments of 4.
Technique Notes:
Twisted 1x1 rib:
knit through the back loop, purl through the back loop.
Moss stitch:
Round 1: knit 1, purl 1
Round 2: purl 1, knit 1
Repeat these two rows for pattern.
Abbreviations are based on the Knitty Standard.

K 3 rounds

Knit 10 rounds in 1x1 twisted rib
Short Leg
Round 1: Switch to grey yarn. Knit first two stitches together (57 stitches). Purl next stitch. Continue in moss stitch to the end of the round.
Round 2: *purl 1, knit one* to end of round.
Round 3: *knit one, purl one* to end of round.
Repeat 2 & 3 for 2 1/2 inches
Heel
At the marker, switch to Paisley yarn and knit the first 24 stitches. Move the remaining 33 stitches onto waste yarn or a stitch holder.
Next round: Sl 1, purl to end.
Next round: Sl 1, SSK, K to last 3 stitches, K2tog, K1 (22 stitches)
Repeat these two rows until there are 10 stitches on the needle, ending with a purl row.
With RS facing, pick up the nearest slipped stitch from the edge and knit it. Knit to end of the row, pick up the nearest slipped stitch and knit.
Repeat until there are 24 heel stitches. PM after last heel stitch to mark beginning of all new rounds.
Move 33 held stitches back onto needles and knit these in moss stitch. PM between last instep stitch and first heel stitch. Knit the 24 stitches from the heel in stockinette.
Work 33 instep stitches in moss stitch, and sole stitches in stockinette until to the foot measures 2 inches less than total desired length.
Shape Toe
Note: I find it easiest to work this over 2 needles, especially as the number of stitches decreases, but be careful to make sure you don’t get “ladder gaps” on either or both sides. If you do, tr shifting the stitches around on the needles to redistribute the tension.
Switch to Paisley. Knit 1 round.
Round 2: K1, K2tog, knit to end of round. (56 stitches).
Round 3: Knit 28 stitches and PM. Remove the next marker, knit to next marker.
Round 4: After marker, K2tog, K to 2 stitches before marker, SSK, K2tog, K to 2 stitches before marker, SSK.
Round 5: K all stitches.
Repeat 4 & 5 until there are 20 stitches left (10 on each needle).
Close toe with kitchener stitch, or use a 3 needle bind-off if you detest kitchener stitch as much as I do.
Finishing
Turn the sock inside out. Run an 8” elastic thread through the twisted knit stitches of the first row of ribbing directly below the picot hem. Pull out any excess elastic, tie off and secure ends.
Weave in all ends, gently wash and block. Pull picot hem points up and pin to dry.
Make second sock the same as the first.
